BMW E36 Tweeter Pods Install Guide

BMW E36 tweeter pods

Step-by-Step Installation & Removal Instructions

This guide explains how to install and remove your BMW E36 Tweeter Pods safely and correctly. Follow the steps below to mount the pods to your car.

Note:
This guide only covers the installation and removal of the tweeter pods themselves. Removal of the original factory plastic trim covers is not included in this guide at this moment, but can be found on the internet.

Each kit includes the tweeter pods and 4 rubber grommets (one spare per side).

Tools & Parts Needed

  • BMW E36 Tweeter Pods

  • Included rubber grommets

  • Rubber hammer / mallet (optional)

  • Your hands (no special tools required)

Installation typically takes less than 2 minutes per side.

Installation — step-by-step

Step 1 – Install the Rubber Grommet

Insert the rubber grommet into the hole in the door panel.

Push it firmly into place until it sits fully flush with the door.

If necessary, you can tap it in using a rubber hammer or mallet.

Note: Removing the rubber grommet without damaging it can be difficult. You may need to remove the grommet if you want to reinstall the original trim covers or transfer the tweeter pods to another vehicle. For this reason, each kit includes one spare grommet per side in case the grommet breaks during installation or removal.

Step 2 – Align the Bottom Pin

Hold the tweeter pod and line up the bottom mounting pin with the hole in the door.

Lightly insert the pin into the hole.

Do not apply force — it should sit naturally in position.

Step 3 – Push Down and Rotate the Pod

Push the tweeter pod downward in the direction shown by arrow 1 until it clicks into place.

Do not apply excessive force. The click can be subtle.

Next, rotate the top of the tweeter pod so that the upper pin aligns with the rubber grommet (arrow 2 in the image).

Step 4 – Push the Upper Pin Into the Grommet

Place your finger directly behind the location of the upper pin to support the part.

Then press the pin into the rubber grommet.

Supporting the area behind the pin prevents unnecessary bending of the tweeter pod during installation.

Once installed, confirm the pod sits flush with the door panel

BMW E36 Tweeter Pod Removal

If you need to remove the tweeter pods (for example when reverting to factory trim or moving the pods to another vehicle), follow these steps.

Step 1 – Wiggle and Pull Outward

Grab the tweeter pod and gently wiggle it while pulling outward. Try to not use any prying tools.

Do not pull too hard, as the pod may suddenly release from the rubber grommet and damage the lower edge and lower pin.

Step 2 – Lift Up to Release the Bottom Pin

Once the top pin releases from the grommet, pull the pod upward to release the bottom pin from the door.

FAQ

Do these tweeter pods fit all BMW E36 models?

No, they are designed to fit E36 Coupe and Convertible models.

Do BMW E36 models come with factory tweeters?

Yes, some do, but they are located in the door card. By relocating your tweeters higher up to the side mirror panel, you bring high-frequency sound closer to ear level, where it's meant to be heard. This improves soundstage, clarity, and stereo imaging, especially when paired with high-quality component speakers.

Can I return the car to original trim later?

Yes. The tweeter pods can be removed and the original trim covers reinstalled if desired.

Do I need special tools to install the pods?

No special tools are required. Installation typically takes only a few minutes per side.
